Biography
Adriano Chicco, born in Genoa in 1907 and a public prosecutor by profession, was the greatest Italian chess historian. His work "History of Chess in Italy," written in collaboration with Antonio Rosino, is particularly noteworthy.
He is the author of approximately 540 two- and three-move problems, 118 of which were prize-winning (47 first prizes), and was awarded the titles of "International Master of Composition" and "International Arbiter" by FIDE.
A collector of books and old chess codexes, Chicco, together with Giorgio Porreca, authored articles, essays, books, and a fundamental Encyclopedic Dictionary of Chess, considered by experts to be a "classic" of chess literature. For sixteen years, he headed the problems section of the journal L'Italia Scacchiistica. In 1983, the AMIS (Italian Association of Chess Masters) awarded him the International Gioacchino Greco Prize "A Life for Chess." He died in 1990 at the age of 83.
