Mario Nicola Napolitano (February 10, 1910 in Acquaviva delle Fonti - October 31, 1995 in Florence) was an Italian chess master.
At the beginning of his career, Napolitano took 5th place in Venice in 1928. In 1934 he won in Milan. He had played many Italian championships and local tournaments - before, during and after the Second World War. In 1935 he took 6th place in Florence (6th ITA championship; won by Antonio Sacconi ). In 1938 he finished in a tie for 4th-6th place in Savona (Vincenzo Castaldi won). In 1938 he won in Milan. In 1939 he finished 3rd-4th in Rome (9th ITA Championship; won by Mario Monticelli ). In 1942 Napolitano took 11th place in Munich (1st European Championship). The winner of the tournament was Alexander Alekhine . In 1943 he took 2nd place in Florence behind Vincenzo Nestler (10th ITA Championship).
Napolitano was also a leading correspondence chess player in the 40s and 50s. In 1953, Mario Napolitano finished 2nd and 3rd behind Cecil Purdy in the 1st World Correspondence Chess Championship together with Harald Malmgren. At the 2nd World Correspondence Chess Championship (1956-1959) he came 7th and at the 3rd World Correspondence Chess Championship (1959-1962) he came 5th.
Awarded the title of International Correspondence Chess Grandmaster .
