Martin Johann Hell (* November 10, 1842 in Hallein; † September 26, 1922 in the city of Salzburg) was the elementary school principal in the village of Liefering.
Life
Hell headed the Liefering elementary school from 1879 to 1902, which at that time still belonged to the municipality of Siezenheim. Thanks to his efforts, the land on which the current school building was built was purchased from the Hartlwirt in 1895. Construction was completed in 1900.
Hell was extremely close to nature and introduced new teaching methods, such as outdoor instruction. He was also a beekeeper.
He is also the father (hence "Martin Hell the Elder") of the former Salzburg state archaeologist Martin Hell (* 1885; † 1975).
Commemoration
Martin-Hell-Straße in what is now the Salzburg district of Liefering is named after Martin Johann Hell.
His gravestone was erected as a Martin-Hell memorial stone southeast of the elementary school building in Liefering on the occasion of the school's centenary.
