Peter Heinrich Wilhelm Schönmann (April 7, 1889 in Burgdorf; May 15, 1970 in Hamburg)

He was a German chess master.

His life
Schönmann was headmaster at the Lutterothschule in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel until March 1955.

Tournament Chess
Schönmann finished 8th-9th in the Main Tournament B of the DSB Congress in Hamburg in 1910. In 1913, he shared second place in Hamburg. In 1914, he won a simultaneous game against Emanuel Lasker in Hamburg and finished 15th in the Main Tournament A of the 19th DSB Congress in Mannheim.

In the Main Tournament of the 20th DSB Congress in Berlin in 1920, he finished second behind Friedrich Sämisch. He finished fourth in the Kiel Tournament that same year. In the Main Tournament C of the German Chess Association Congress in Vienna in 1926, he shared first place with Barth (Freiberg, Saxony) and was awarded the Austrian Championship title.

A year later, he finished 6th–7th in Bremen and 10th–11th at the DSB Congress in Magdeburg. In 1928, he won the Greater Hamburg Championship and the Lübeck tournament (Quadrangular) with 10/13 after a tiebreak against Rodatz (+1 =2 −0). In 1930, he shared 1st place in Hamburg, and in 1932, he finished 2nd in Hamburg, and 8th in the 3rd German Championship in 1935 in Aachen.

He participated with the German team in the unofficial Chess Olympiad of 1926 and the 1928 Chess Olympiad.

Correspondence Chess
In the 1935 Federal Championship of the then International Correspondence Chess Federation (IFSB) (now ICCF) (considered the unofficial European Correspondence Chess Championship), Schönmann shared 2nd–3rd place with F. Ekström (Sweden) behind Paul Keres.

He played in the final of the 2nd World Correspondence Chess Team Championship on board 5 of the German national team, finishing third with them in 1955. Two years later, he became an honorary member of the Association of German Correspondence Chess Friends.

In the Dr. Dyckhoff Memorial Tournament (1954–56), he won second prize in a strong international master class group.
