David Grant Petrie was born to Jemima Petrie on 22 April 1894 in Dundee.
In the 1891 Census, Jemima was found in the employ of a family of the name of Grant!
David was brought up as one of the family by an Uncle and Aunt of Jemima's - Alexander and Annie Petrie of Blairgowrie and Rattray, Perthshire.
He enlisted in Edinburgh on 9th September 1914, aged 20. His records show that he was in and out of Clearing Stations. He was killed in action on 19 July 1916 - probably in action north-east of Vermelles, France.
His death, recorded in the Blairgowrie Advertiser, "came to him instantaneously and he was mercifully spared the agony of protracted suffering" - quoted from the Rev. A.W. Mackie of the Rattray United Free Church.
David is buried in Vermelles British Cemetery, France. He is commemorated on the Blairgowrie and Rattray War Memorial: Behind The Names' by M. Duffy; BBC 90 Years of Remembrance; and this website.
