Marta Sudraba (born March 27, 1975, in Tukums or, according to other sources, Riga, died July 13, 2025, in Vienna, Austria) was a Latvian cellist.
In 1993, she graduated from the Emīls Dārziņš Music School in Riga.
In 1997, she completed her studies at the Latvian Music Academy in Eleonora Testeļeca’s cello class.
From 1997 to 1998, she studied under S. Popov in London.
In 2000, she earned a master’s degree at the Basel Music Academy.
In 1997, she began playing the cello in the chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica, becoming the concertmaster of the cello section.
In 1998, she joined the Kremer Trio.
In 2007, she released her solo album Ex Animo (“From the Heart”).
She performed with various orchestras both in Latvia and abroad.
She lived in Vienna, Austria, where she was a member of the Vienna Philharmonic.
Marta’s mother, Lija Sudraba, was a music teacher.
Marta’s son, Kristaps Andris Austers, was born when she was 18 years old. He is a professional musician, having graduated from the Riga Dome Choir School and continuing his studies in Vienna.
She was married to the Austrian violinist Sebastian Gürtler.
Marta passed away prematurely on July 13, 2025, in Vienna, Austria.
“You haven’t left – we are still with you, just as you are in us,” said Gidon Kremer, remembering her husband Sebastian and son Kristaps, to whom he expressed his deepest condolences and affirmed that Marta will live on in the memories and hearts of all her friends.
