Elza Kungaeva
26 March 2000, Chechnya, village of Tangi
Russian army colonel Yuri Budanov was intoxicated while on duty together with his subordinates. After a conflict with senior lieutenant Bagreev, who attempted to stop unlawful actions, Budanov assaulted him and threw him into a pit, where Bagreev remained until morning.
That same night, Budanov and his soldiers arrived in the village of Tangi. One of the first civilian homes they entered belonged to the Kungayev family.
From the house, where four underage children were present, soldiers—on Budanov’s order—carried out 18-year-old Elza Kungaeva, wrapped in a carpet. Her mother pleaded with them to stop, and her father, who resisted, was severely beaten. Elza was taken to an armored personnel carrier (BMP), where she was raped, beaten, and strangled with a fishing line.
Her body was buried in a nearby trench.
