Rolf Richter (* Monday, May 26, 1941 in Oederan, Sachsen; † Thursday, January 14, 1988 in Oederan) was a German study composer

Rolf Richter played chess on the Progress Oederan team when he was young. Around 1961 he began composing chess problems. He published several three-mover and moremover tasks as well as auxiliary and self-checkmate tasks. But his main interest was the endgame study of chess.

In the 1970s he became the most successful study composer in the GDR. By concentrating on tasks, he won a double-digit number of prizes and other awards. Richter composed around 80 endgame studies.

According to Dr. Rainer Staudte, Richter was a strong smoker.
