Karl Lorenz Jesper Jespersen

Danish chess composer of problems and endgame studies (3,470 from 1879,

of which more than 70 won prizes) and of articles in Skakbladetand Tidskrift för Schack.

Jespersen was achaplain and then a parish priest.

Karl Lorenz Jesper Jespersen (1 August 1848, Copenhagen - 7 August 1914, Copenhagen) was a Danish chess composer.

He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Copenhagen and was ordained as a pastor in the Protestant Church. In 1886 he became pastor of St Nicholas Church in Svendborg .

He wrote around 3000 problems, over 200 of which won prizes. He collaborated with numerous journals, including the Italian Nuova Rivista degli chess , L'Eco degli Scacchi , Ruy Lopez and the Swedish Tidskrift för Schack . He was the first honorary member of the Danish society Dansk Skak Union .

After suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for many years, he took a leave of absence from his duties as a parish priest in 1909 and spent his last years in Copenhagen.

He wrote the book 320 Danske Skakopgaver, saerlig 1872-1902 (ed. Gustaf Lindströms, Stockholm, 1902), a collection of editions by Danish authors.
