James Joseph Glynn (21-12-1847 - 07-03-1925)

Australian chess composer

James Glynn was a direct mover composer. He wrote “The Problem Art in Australia” (1896)

He was one of the pioneers of problem chess in Australia. In 1896 he published an article on the "Art of Problem Chess in Australia", which appeared in the first (and probably only) volume of the Australian Chess Annual. In it he briefly outlines his rules of composition. For him, the essential requirements of a composition are the legality of the position and the correctness of the solution; the four essential elements of a problem are then the beauty of the idea, the difficulty, the originality and the quality of the construction, whereby he focuses in particular on the economy of means. Glynn's article is available on the Internet at ozproblems.com/archives/problem-history.
