Johannes Kohtz wrote in his obituary of Richard Schulder (19 November 1858 - 24 January 1918), who was born 150 years ago, that his name was only known in the inner circle of Rhineland chess friends, although he had shown himself to be a promising problem composer long before that. The 3rd prize in the highly competitive Nuremberg Problem Tournament in 1883 was Schulder's greatest success, after which he withdrew almost completely from the public eye, although he continued to compose for himself; he composed a total of around 100 chess problems, only a small number of which were published.
