Franz Sackmann (* July 12, 1888 in Brannenburg  -   † February 22, 1927 in Kaiserslautern) was a German engineer, chess player, and chess composer.

Sackmann studied at the Technical University of Munich and subsequently worked in Esslingen am Neckar, Charlottenburg, and as a senior engineer at the Kaiserslautern ironworks.

Sackmann discovered chess at an early age. He achieved considerable skill and usually played second board in the Kaiserslautern Chess Club. However, his particular focus was on chess composition. From 1906 onward, he composed approximately 200 three- and multi-move pieces and over 100 studies, achieving remarkable achievements over two decades. He owed his greatest inspiration to the pioneers of the New German School, Johannes Kohtz and Carl Kockelkorn, as well as Master Fritz Köhnlein from Nuremberg. The Sackmann combination was named after him: a multi-move approach of a piece to a finish line, whereby a selection is made from several fields of the finish line.
