Jonas Ephraim Cauveren (17.03.1883-28.05.1943)

Chess composer

In January 1931, our Dutch sister society, the Nederlandsche Bond van Probleemvrienden, was founded. It was the second attempt to bring the interests of chess problemists into an organizational form, as a Bond van Nederlandsche Schaakproblemisten had already been founded in Amsterdam on 19 June 1910, whose secretary was Jonas Ephraim Cauveren (17.3.1883-28.5.1943). As Cauveren later reported, the association wanted to take action against plagiarism in particular and ensure that composers received specimen copies of their published works as well as a fee for first publications. A composition tournament was held at the foundation, which ended in a side-solution fiasco and contributed to the demise of the barely formed society.

Cauveren had begun composing in the early years of the last century, concentrating mainly on three-movement problems and creating around 400 chess problems in total.
