Jānis Kundziņš dzima Kārļa un viņa sievas Karlīnes, dzimušas Zilbertes ģimenē 24.12.1857. Dobeles apriņķa Sīpeles pagasta "Kundziņos". Mācījās Jelgavas ģimnāzijā.
1878.-1885. studēja medicīnu Tērbatas universitātē.
1882. iestājas studentu korporācijā Lettonia.
Draudzes ārsts Vecpiebalgā. Piedalījās krievu japāņu karā.
Mira 07.03.1913.
